Four Killed, Nine Injured in Eldoret-Nakuru Highway Collision

A tragic accident has struck the Eldoret-Nakuru highway, leaving four people dead and nine injured after a 14-seater matatu collided with a bus on Monday, December 18, 2023.

Details remain scarce, but preliminary reports indicate the collision occurred near Moiben, roughly midway between Eldoret and Nakuru. Emergency services responded promptly, rushing the injured to nearby hospitals.

"The scene was horrific," recounted a witness who spoke to K24 News on condition of anonymity. "The vehicles were mangled, and there were people crying for help. It was heartbreaking."

Authorities on the ground confirmed the fatalities and expressed their condolences to the families affected. "We are saddened by this tragic loss of life," said Uasin Gishu County Traffic Commander Josephat Kithenya. "Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of those who perished."

Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing, with Kithenya stating, "We have launched a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding this crash. We will share any updates as they become available."

Meanwhile, calls for improved road safety measures have surfaced following the incident. "This is a stark reminder of the dangers on our roads," said Moiben MCA Kipkorir Menjo. "We urge drivers to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations. The lives of our loved ones depend on it."

The Eldoret-Nakuru highway, a vital transport artery in western Kenya, has unfortunately witnessed similar tragedies in the past. This latest accident underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and increased efforts to raise awareness about safe driving practices.

As investigations continue and families come to terms with the loss, the community mourns those who perished and hopes for a speedy recovery for the injured. This tragic event serves as a powerful reminder to prioritize safety on the roads and to value every human life.
