Ruto vows to fight cartels and implement health reforms.
President William Ruto has said that his government will not relent on the implementation of the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) and will take on the cartels in the health ministry head-on.
Speaking at a public rally on Thursday, the President said that the SHIF is a key pillar of his administration's agenda to provide universal health coverage to all Kenyans.
He said that the SHIF will replace the current National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) and establish three new funds: the Primary Healthcare Fund, the Social Health Insurance Fund, and the Emergency, Chronic and Critical Illness Fund.
He said that these funds will ensure that every Kenyan can access quality and affordable health services at all levels of care, without facing financial hardship.
He also said that the SHIF will complement the Community Health Policy and Primary Health Care and Health Financing Strategies, which aim to strengthen the health system and improve service delivery.
The President said that he is aware of the challenges and resistance that his health reforms are facing from some quarters, especially the cartels in the health ministry.
He added that he will not allow the cartels to sabotage his vision of transforming the health sector and improving the lives of Kenyans.
According to him, he has instructed the Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha to be ruthless with the cartels and ensure that they are brought to book.He also urged the public to support his health reforms and report any cases of corruption or malpractice in the health sector.
He said that his government is committed to changing the architecture of the country's primary health care and ensuring that no Kenyan is left behind in the quest for a healthy nation.
