In a stark assessment, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has declared that stamping out banditry in the North Rift region will require "at least 20 years" of sustained effort. Brigadier Ahmed Saman, the KDF commander overseeing Operation Maliza Uhalifu, emphasized the complex nature of the problem, going beyond mere security operations to address entrenched cultural and economic factors.
"This is not just a security challenge," Brigadier Saman stated. "Banditry is fueled by historical grievances, cultural practices, and poverty. To truly eradicate it, we must change the fabric of society in affected areas."
The KDF's strategy acknowledges the limitations of short-term military campaigns. While Operation Maliza Uhalifu continues to neutralize bandit hideouts and disrupt criminal networks, Brigadier Saman highlighted the critical role of education in breaking the cycle of violence.
"Educating a child today will take almost 20 years, which is why I am saying we need to be patient," he explained. "The KDF will remain on the ground, but its long-term success hinges on empowering communities through knowledge and opportunity."
This focus on education complements ongoing efforts to address underlying grievances, including fostering dialogue between communities, facilitating resource sharing, and promoting alternative livelihoods. Recognizing the deep-seated nature of the challenge, Brigadier Saman urged patience and a multi-pronged approach.
"This is a marathon, not a sprint," he concluded. "Eradicating banditry demands sustained commitment, a willingness to address root causes, and a united front from communities, security forces, and the government. Only then can we build a lasting peace and prosperity in the North Rift."
KDF's 20-year estimate serves as a sobering reminder of the challenges in combating banditry. While immediate security measures are crucial, the long-term solution lies in dismantling the systems that perpetuate this cycle of violence and providing affected communities with the tools to build a brighter future.
