President Ruto Commissions Construction of Riruta-Ngong Commuter Rail Line
Nairobi, Kenya - December 15, 2023 - President William Ruto has officially commissioned the construction of the highly anticipated Riruta-Ngong commuter rail line. The 24-kilometer line is expected to significantly improve transportation for residents living along the busy corridor, decongesting roads and boosting economic activity.
"This project is a critical step towards transforming Nairobi into a modern, efficient, and sustainable city," President Ruto said during the groundbreaking ceremony held at the Riruta terminus. "The Riruta-Ngong rail line will not only ease traffic flow but also create new jobs and opportunities for Kenyans."
The project, which is estimated to cost KES 42 billion, is being funded by the Kenyan government and a consortium of international lenders. Construction is expected to be completed within three years.
"We are confident that this project will be completed on time and within budget," Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said. "We have put in place all the necessary safeguards to ensure that the project is delivered to the highest standards."
The Riruta-Ngong rail line is part of a larger plan to develop a comprehensive public transportation system for Nairobi. The government is also planning to build several other commuter rail lines, as well as a light rail system.
"We are committed to making Nairobi a city that is accessible and affordable for everyone," President Ruto said. "We believe that a well-functioning public transportation system is essential for achieving this goal."
The commissioning of the Riruta-Ngong rail line was welcomed by residents and businesses along the corridor.
"This is a great day for us," said John Mwangi, a resident of Riruta. "This train will make it much easier for me to get to work and back. I won't have to spend hours sitting in traffic anymore."
"I am confident that this project will boost business in Ngong," said Jane Njeri, who owns a shop in the town. "More people will be able to come to Ngong to shop and do business."
The construction of the Riruta-Ngong rail line is a major milestone for the Kenyan government. The project is expected to have a significant impact on the lives of millions of Kenyans and is a testament to the government's commitment to improving infrastructure and developing the economy.
